The doctoral program in History and Philosophy of Economics is very selective, and accepts only a few doctoral students to ensure a high quality and tailored-made supervision process.

Potential candidates are encouraged to submit their application when assistantship or scholarship positions are available on the job application website of the University of Lausanne. It is also possible to send a spontaneous application to potential supervisors.

When applying, candidates should submit the following (in either French or English):

- a CV

- a letter of motivation

- a research proposal

- Bachelor and Master transcript of grades

- and optionally a letter of academic reference

Education and language requirement

A MSc degree in history of economics, in philosophy of economics, in economics, in philosophy and history of science, or in a related discipline is necessary at the time of enrollment.

The dissertation can be written, upon agreement with the PhD supervisor, in either French, English, or in another Swiss national language (German or Italian). However, it is necessary for all candidates to have at least some basic knowledge of the French language in order to get a smoother acculturation. Candidates that look for financing (assistantship or scholarship) are required to have at least a B2 level in French, because of teaching and other tasks they will have to accomplish.
